The Sacred Cedar Shrine (杉神社) is a family owned and run Shinto Shrine in Western Wisconsin devoted to the spirit of trees. The enshrined Kami is 祝福の木の精神 (Blessed Spirit of Trees) and the shrine venerates a small grove of cedars growing on untiled land on the site of an ancient spring.
Preserving this land and its cedars, planting new cedar seedlings, and sharing saplings from the trees on our land, are some of the things we do to share the sacredness of this place, and to help restore the world around us.
As Americans practicing an indigenous Japanese religion on soil violently captured from the First Nations of America, we recognize that our practices are inherently syncretic and contradictory, so we are devoted to finding a sincere path that is respectful of our ancestors and venerates the unique history and aspects of Great Nature where we live.
We believe that all beings are interrelated, and that Divinity is immanent in all of Nature. We believe that sacredness expresses itself in subtle ways, and is manifest in the Kami. We believe that failure to respect or take into account the feelings of other beings, including the Kami and Great Nature, causes problems for all beings.
Our shrine's priest performs private and public daily, monthly, and seasonal rituals of purification and veneration. Pastoral and clergy services including weddings, groundbreaking ceremonies, spiritual and couples counseling, classes on interfaith or Shinto, blessings, and purifications are also available. Our shrine's products include hand-smithed ritual and garden tools made by our shrine's members, good luck talismans, and home blessing items.
Our shrine's outreach and advocacy includes a radio station that features Shinto and other Pagan music and programming, a 501(c)4 devoted to equality for minority religious expression in America, professional and informal workshops on interfaith and cultural sensitivity, and direct engagement in interfaith political activism in the Twin Cities.
